3dsmax 8 and dds

Hey, I'm running 3dsmax 8 on Vista and I'm having problems with loading .dds files for the textures.

"Error creating Direct3D Device"

I've got DirectX installed. I've installed dds plugin for max (though I though max8 could already open dds files by default), and yet I still get the error.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I've got an XP machine with max8 as well and it opened it fine, so I have a feeling it's Vista, just want to see if there are any other Vista users out there that have run into this problem.
