Escort Missions

Well I would not be an advocate of using console codes to play

Whats this about fast travel ? Is this a method by which a player can avoid having to walk ?

I am not in favor of this either but I guess I don't have a choice

I have some misc, quests in the Submissions and WIP which are escort types I can add more, anyone is welcome to take them and add them to their claim

Enjoy

Fast travel was implemented in Oblivion because some people complained that the fast travel system in Morrowind wasn't good enough. It essentially allows you to instantly teleport to any place that you have already been to.

It wouldn't be using the console, just a scripting function. For instance the quest stage in the CS would look like this:

Stage 10
(journal entry - the actual words)
So and so asked me to escort them to such and such a place.

(results script)
set enablefasttravel to 0

Then at the end of the quest there would be a quest stage that looked like this:

Stage 100
(journal entry)
I escorted so and so to such and such and place and gold some gold as a reward.

(results script)
set enablefasttravel to 1

As a player I like the fast-travel system a lot. I simply find it more fun to explore new areas than trodding back and forth on the same old roads. However I think the game would have been better if you could only fast-travel to cities and not use it as stepping stones to get out into the wilderness immediately. There's not enough distance between Oblivion's cities and the wilderness as it is.

Lingwei: Would that break fast-travel completely until the objective is achieved? If so I fear that might piss off a few players. Hmm... *thinks* But you could shield it. Make it obvious to the player that agreeing to the quest means he'll have to do it then and there, and won't reall be able to do anything else in the meantime. I also think players should have the option of ending the quest and regaining fast-travel function by speaking to the NPC, or if they're evil, killing him/her.

There's no fast travel anyway (or at least I wasn't able to) so it won't be a problem.

Well there should be fast travel in v3, once we have a working map.

I've got an interesting solution for the fast-travel problem. Couldn't you just disallow the NPC from fast-traveling with you? If he/she will only move while you're next to her, then you can't fast-travel, cause you won't get the quest.

Seems reasonable right? I'm not exactly sure how NPC movement when you fast-travel works, but it can't be too hard to do

Also allows you to fast-travel as needed, you just won't get the quest, and the person will be standing there on the roads, and you'll have to find them again

Seniosh seems to have the most logical resolve for this issue, since I am not familiar yet with the OB travel methods as long as it can be done without restricting the player from using the fast travel option for other reasons.

Can this work, if the player accepts an escort mission and during the course of traveling decides to leave and do something else ( I do not know why anyone would do this) but IF it happened couldn't we do similar to the companion methods, where we tell the NPC to "wait here" in which case then npc remains in place until the player returns and reunites

Now if this can be done, we also need to consider that if the npc was being escorted for protection that the party who the npc was being protected from found the npc and did whatever they intended on doing (killing, kidnapping etc etc) so when the player returns they may find the player missing or dead, if the npc is missing they would have to return to the quest giver, provided it was someone other than the npc escorted... the quest giver can exclaim the failure and whatever punishments this failure bestows will need to be executed

or their could be a ransom or any other number of outcomes

I think this would be good to discuss and have various options available

Enjoy
