Free Alternative to CrazyBump?
Since it's a licensed product now, I can't create normal maps anymore and I'm slightly frustrated (considering its price for a license).
Anyone know any other alternatives (preferably other than the Nvidia normal map filter thing)? Cheers, Dave |

You can use the e.g. the GIMP normalmap plugin:

Hey Dave,
Yeah use GIMP, its free and pretty good. Does not have the layering of Photoshop but with additional plugins should do what you need.

the Gimp is not an alternative to CB when it comes to normal mapping.
As mentioned by Dave, he wants something that its possible to make fairly good bitmap to normal map conversions. And not having to use a very time consuming method of doing good ones with Gimp or nvidia plugin for PS. afaik there isn't anything that does what CB does. However CB isn't in my toolkit anymore and my normal maps are better than ever. I use ZB, Max and photoshop.

uhh, zbrush. I love zbrush.
Anyway, I usually use the nvidia plugin, but it isn't very good for something like a brick stonewall, since it doesn't add a lot of depth too it. how expensive is Crazy Bump anyway? |

You can find a Photoshop plug-in on the NVIDA site.
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photo...ugins.html I find that this plug-in works better than the CrazyBump tool.

The best way to get a really good normal map in to model/sculpt it in the 3d program of your choice. Some programs are designed specifically for sculpting (e.g ZBrush, Modo), whereas others are not sculpting oriented. I've heard good things about the sculpting mode in Blender, though I've never tried it myself. |
