Aye, both those ideas would be more towards the end. We could use a few 'putting people together' quests and 'generating cash to buy guild houses' quests. Recruitment quests could be fun.

Well, it seems this quest is becoming more and more significant, by the looks of it. If we want to make it a pivotal break point then we can include this settlement as a major location throughout the entire questline. In other words, scattered throughout the questline will be settlement-related quests. One or two fetch quests in the beginning, two or three hunting quests in the middle and one major assault quest on the enemies (which could be what provoked them to this large attack).

This way, we can have Laric object to the settlement along the way, explaining his displeasure with all the lives they lose in attempts to gain a foothold in the area. Once a scout reports that a very large force is slowly moving towards the settlement he sees his chance to end what's become a war of vanity. The important point here is to perfectly illustrate that neither choice is much better. A lesser evil kind of situation.

Now, it sounds more like a final choice. Either fulfill your duty to the Fighters' Guild and let its corruption spread or let it crumble back down to what it was before.

On a related note, how about adding some actual conversations between the leader and second-in-command? When the player shows up to fetch a quest he gets to witness some light arguing on the course of action. Or, if possible, we could script a new conversation system more similar to the BioWare style where a player may speak with, or at least listen to, more than one person at a time. Simply changing the standard camera angle and creating a new way of selecting topics would give a great novelty factor, come to think of it.

Those are all good ideas. I'd just like to point out though that for our Fighter's Guild, the player fills the role of one of the founding leaders themselves.

The overall plan is that the BM Fighter's Guild had its charter revoked due to chronic incompetence and corruption, leaving a gap that has been filled by hired goons and mercenaries. The main quest line concerns the player's attempts (with a few other guys, Laric would be one of them) to rebuild the Fighter's Guild. You don't even have guildhalls to start with, and have to earn them.

So you'll really know (and hopefully like) the other leaders by the time this quest appears. I guess Laric would be the visionary of the group, the man with the plan.
