- Ysne - 02-06-2007 I think they look wonderful. You are a truly gifted artist Keilanai. - Kodama - 02-06-2007 They look awesome! :goodjob: I like the "paste applique method" i think that method will work best for the uniforms. Again... they look awesome! :goodjob: Thank you! - Kielanai - 02-07-2007 Well, I wasn't sure about the second pattern, but the more I worked with it, the more I decided I really like it. So, I did a few things with it tonight. First, I tried to fix the kanji moon, but realized that the back of the hakama is exactly like the front, only mirrored. So, whatever I put on the front will show in reverse on the back. That means real character lettering of any kind is out. hrug: (invented characters, however, ...) I tried to put the kanji moon in the center back of the kimono, but it divided it in half and mirrored it again. Which, actually looked really cool, but is not readable. (see comment about invented characters ...) Although the mon worked on the kamishimo without dividing and flipping, so I will try kanji on that mesh. Wouldn't that be nice to have "Knifeblossom" written in kanji on the back, and then have two gold mon at the front shoulders? It's worth a try just to see if I can do it. So, on the Sumie design, I gave up on kanji decoration and used a dragon. Reversable without problem. Here's the final result, along with some different colors I tried out. Edit: Grr ... I can't get my links to work, so I'll past here. - Kodama - 02-07-2007 The dragons look cool :goodjob: Knifeblossom written in kanji, i would like to see that  It's too bad the kanji reverse, but this does not come as a surprise to me. So if writing Knifeblossom in kanji on the back and adding gold mon to the front of the shoulders works fine... go for it, it sounds great to me =) - Corthian - 02-07-2007 Sorry about how I UV mapped the clothes, but making the hakama reversed like that was the only way to make to seams on the sides match up when using seamless textures. I never thought anyone would want one thing on the back and an other on the front. I really like the dark green texture by the way. Oh, I totally understand! - Kielanai - 02-07-2007 Most of these kimono are just testing my limits and seeing what's possible and what's not, ... trying to mentally mark what works on one design, but doesn't on another. I don't know anything about UV maps, so experimenting is the only way I can do that. :p For example the kiku mon that I put on the Knifeblossom kamishimo, I had to put the mon to the far right in order to center it on the back. Now I need to try to find where the front shoulders are. My first realization that UV maps could do strange things like this was when I made that Bump of Chicken fan Tshirt awhile back. I put the cat design on the front center of the texture, but then it showed up split in half on the side and back. O_o? So, I had to just paste and save a lot to find the right place for it. After that, I expect each mesh to have its own individual, and sometimes unexpected, layout. ^_^ So, tonight, I will finish up the second batch. All that's left is lower class. And then I will try the new ideas for the Knifeblossom uniform. Edit: Done with second batch for cold climates. Some samples for traditional and fantasy alike. ^_^ Seigaiha is a traditional pattern often seen on those pleated hakama. Btw, does anyone recognize the burlap texture on two of the solid color hakama? (Take a wild guess where I got it.) Knifeblossom Again - Kielanai - 02-08-2007 I keep coming back to this one, don't I? =) Okay, this time I darkened all the reds a little, switched kimono to solid white, pasted red kiku mon on sleeves only, pasted gold kiku mon on front, pasted Knifeblossom name over large kiku on back. The kiku on the sleeves will be easy to erase, resize, or place differently (individually) this way. Or, I can leave them off altogether. Same for the gold ones. I think the ones at the ends of the sleeves look nice, but could take or leave the others. Thoughts? The kanji on the back did not flip. It is a little long and could be shrunk, but it's readable. It says "Naifu Kaga", which literally means "Knife Flower Blossom". There are other words for "blossom" (like sakura), but this is pretty generic, yet flowering. "Naifu" is in katakana instead of kanji because it is not a native Japanese word. If kanji is preferred, I would need to use a different word, ... like dagger. But I like "Naifukaga", personally. ^_^ Or, I can remove it, too. The nice thing about learning to do the applique is that it makes it more changeable. - Kodama - 02-08-2007 Hmmm... i have no idea were you got that burlap texture from ?( The new patterns look great, you have so many patterns you could start a fashion show We should put your character in-game as a clothing shop npc Ok, about the back of the Knifeblossom uniform, the word "Naifu" is just an english word so i think it would be better to use an old japanese word for knife, something like "hocho" maybe? hrug: So then it would be "Hocho Kaga" or "Hocho Sakura" but i'm no expert at the japanese language, so tell me what you think of it Kielanai. The pattern texture ... - Kielanai - 02-08-2007 The burlap texture is from one of those cloth bolts in the game! I realized there was fabric right there next to her in all those pictures, and not being used for anything. None of the clothing, bedspreads, tapestries, or anything is made from the game fabric. So, ... I looked them up, made dds files from them and stuck them in my collection of textures. I used another one in the dark hakama in an earlier picture, but changed the coloring. I should retexture a room somewhere using those fabrics, just because everyone seems to have them, but no one actually uses them. Hai! "Houchou" it is! "Sakura" is cherry blossom specific. "Kaga" is generic flower blossom. Is "sakura" preferred? I started to use that first because that is the word most people are familiar with, but I didn't know if you wanted cherry blossom. "Sakura" is definitely more symbolic of samurai. Whichever is preferred is no problem. ^_^ What about kiku? Does anything else need changing? I can make final changes tonight. I will need to take about a week or two off between clothing batches to give attention to other things, but there is no deadline, right? I'm half through with citizen clothing. I'll do the clan uniforms last. The process is getting faster and easier for me now. I can complete one outfit for both genders and get it in game in about an hour. Edit: Oh, and that would be funny for her to sell clothing in Akavir! :lmao: If you need an extra NPC, you are welcome to use her. I am writing a fanfic about her returning to Akavir, so I may have to include a joke about her making kimono or something. Just for fun. ^_^ RE: The pattern texture ... - Kodama - 02-08-2007 Quote:Originally posted by Kielanai So that's where you got the texture from... i should have known :explained: Yeah, it makes sense to use the cloth bolts textures, you should retexture some cloth bolts with your kimono patterns, that would look nice in a shop  I like Sakura... but i think Kaga would be the better choice for Knifeblossom. Maybe i will use Sakura for the name of another place. I think the uniform looks fine as it is, so you don't have to change anything (again). And don't worry about a deadline... there is no deadline Edit: Ok, i will use your character for the clothing shop in Knifeblossom... i mean: Hocho Kaga |
