Konnichiha ... - Kielanai - 01-14-2007

Thank you Ysne. ^_^

Well, this week did not go as I planned, but it went. At least the earthquake and tsunami warnings yesterday didn't cause problems for me, so I'm thankful. I'm posting to let you guys know that I didn't get a chance to work on textures this week like I hoped, so I have no progress to share. I tried some texturing on the hakama/kimono this morning again, and I've realized that I'm up against three things now: time, lack of skills to begin with (still new at this before the move), and forgotten skills (being away from it during the move and holidays, I forgot so much). ?(

I was trying to browse the forums to see what I missed during my move and it looks like Ra's lanterns were already done and much better than what I was toying with. So, I'm guessing I don't need to worry about that. Have the mochi items been done, too?

Corthian's progress on the kimono/clothing is amazing, and I'm noticing that people at other forums are picking up on retexturing the meshes as well. So, at least other people are able to create variety, but I'm still having trouble with it. I can drop a texture square into the folder and use Nifskope to come up with result that pleases me for color and pattern, but I still can't redraw the folds of fabric and shadows like the original textures. The pattern either completely covers it, leaving me to redraw it from scratch, which I can't do using a trackball. Or I end up trying to work around it, and that looks splotchy and really bad. (Really bad.) So I have no idea when/ if I will be able to help with clothing.

I think I will have to stop frustrating myself with failed attempts and take the time to do more tutorials if I want to produce anything of quality. Or maybe I should just stick to what's familiar -- basic furnishings. :| I'm afraid I'm just too unskilled at this point to offer more than support and the occasional success. Gomen ne.

Is there any other way I could help maybe? If nothing else I can cheer you on. ... GAN-BA-TTE! ... GAN-BA-TTE! Big Grin (It's means keep trying hard.) Just looking over the forums I am so amazed at the progress that I'm getting really excited to see the final result! Everyone has done such a great job! :applause:

- Kodama - 01-14-2007

Earthquake and tsunami warnings!???
We don't get those in Holland :]

Ok, about those three things you are up against:
-Time: no problem... take all the time you need.
-Lack of skills: practice makes perfect, take your time and read some tutorials.
-Forgotten skills: don't worry about that... i forget things i have learned all the time.

I don't know if the mochi has been done too, i can't remember and i can't check it out because i'm not using my own computer right now (i am soooooo useless sometimes) :bash:

About the folds and shadows that Corthian makes for the clothes, you don't have to make them yourself if you can't do it... it's good enough if you just retexture the clothes with your new patterns.
After you are done with that, you can put the files on Rhapidshare (or something like that) and share the link with Corthian so he can finish your work by adding the folds and wrinkles.
That way you can be very helpfull to us.
You can also help us by telling us what you think about our ideas and our work.
Or you can just hang around on the forums to talk about meaningless things... most of us do Big Grin

Thanks for cheering us on, we really need that :goodjob:

Aw, thanks, Kodama. - Kielanai - 01-14-2007

Okay, well, I will share example of what I mean then, and you can tell me if its acceptable.

http://s101.photobucket.com/albums/m61/Kielanai/Oblivion%20Screenshots/Kielanai%20no%20Kimono/

Three new screens of comparison Corthian's original design kimono with hakama and one of my retextures. (Corthian, your basic whites go with anything, so I hope you don't mind me reusing some combinations. I set your textures in your own folder within mine.) Picture 1 is how I'm doing ground models -- just a basic shirt mesh with texture variations. Nice and easy. Picture 2 is front view. The texture was taken from a tassled holder for my fan. It's corded, which makes it look slightly pleated, but it totally lost the side open areas where kimono should show through. I did manage to find a way to fix that, but it was very difficult and time consuming, and the pattern ends up not as pretty. And then see how nice all the folds and shading are done on the kimono? All that is completely lost if I texture it with pattern, and that is even more difficult to try to fix. Picture 3 is back view, so you can see it doesn't look bad; it just doesn't look as nice as having those realistic folds and wrinkles and shadows since it is a block pattern rather than texture map.

I have two chibi kimono completely done with matching geta, one long kimono, and this kimono/hakama completely done -- icons and all. I have more textures I wanted to try, but I keep hitting a wall with trying to follow the texture map and drawing skills.

The other thing I might be able to offer help on, if not graphics, is writing. English is my native language, and its what I studied in college, regardless of how screwy my forum and email posts sound. It's more like how I talk (Nihonglish) Tongue, but I take my formal writing very seriously. Although I don't know much about Akaviri lore, I love to write fictions, and I'm willing to study world lore or help proof and edit.

And I'm always good at talking about meaningless things! Big Grin Such as Japan as over a thousand earthquakes a day! Did you know that? Most of them we don't feel because they are too small. But I notice that if we go a long time without noticeable small rumbles, then the big ones are bigger. Tsunami often follow, so many towns on the coast have big tsunami walls and concrete blocks to help. Yesterday we had an earthquake of 8.2 (I think?) and a couple of hours later they were issuing tsunami warnings because the tide dropped -- typical sign. Our position in northeast is good, though, so we didn't suffer anything. That would be freaky to put into the game somehow, ne? Too bad we can't make the screen shake with a wall of water instead of fire, like when sigil stones are taken, and wash the PC into the sea! :O I never hear of Europe having these things. Does Europe have any bad weather? Well, besides rain ... ^_^

EDIT by Kodama: i fixed Corthian 's name.

- mirrored - 01-14-2007

Those look nice. :goodjob: Keep up the good work. Wink

- Kodama - 01-14-2007

Kielanai, i like the patterns a lot, i'm sure that Corthian can fix the folds for you, but anyway... keep trying hard! Big Grin
You can also help us by making icons for Corthian's new items and texturing the ground meshes, and ofcourse you can help with writing
By the way, your forum posts do not sound screwy at all, they are a pleasure to read

I did not know that Japan has over a thousand earthquakes a day, sometimes... Holland has a small earthquake, but never anything serious.
We do get very bad weather, for the last ten years it seems to get worse, i think that we will get small tornado's in about another ten years from now with global warming, but i really hope not Confusedhrug:
We do get a flood every now and then, most often where the big rivers are, but not where i live (the north-west of Holland).
It's quite safe and very boring where i live.

Hmmm... a tsunami in-game... Big Grin i would like that, but it would need a lot of scripting and a large wave model, but we could never make it look cool.

We could just wait for another TES game. Tongue

- Kodama - 01-14-2007

Yeah, but i think it would be even harder to get a tsunami in-game in the next TES game Wink

- Ysne - 01-15-2007

The work looks nice Keilanai. You will gain back the skills that got rusty. And learn more. You are very gifted.

Thanks! ^_^ - Kielanai - 01-15-2007

Floods ... nh, have those here, too, because of typhoons. Northern Tohoku weather: winter with snow over the head in some places, spring with dust storms from Chinese desert, summer with rainy season, and autumn with typhoons. Nicest time of year is late spring/ early summer -- sunny and lots of sakura in bloom. Early autumn is also nice with dragonflies and colorful leaves. But summer is very humid and wet, and winter in northern regions is very snowy. Earthquakes have no season. They just hit when they feel like it. Not much tornado or thunder and lightning this way, though. I hear thunder maybe once or twice a year. Global warming might be responsible for our unusually warm winter this year. We are way below average on snowfall and temperatures are warm enough that farmers are beginning to fear their fruit trees will bloom too early and then freeze. Will you be able to set weather controls for Akavir, or it is randomized?

Gomennasai, Corthian! I didn't mean to spell your name wrong. (I keep wanting to say Ko-ru-thi-an, but I know that's wrong.) Tongue

And, yes! I can do icons! ^_^ I can do much better icons now than when my island mod was released, so I would be happy to help with that when they are needed. Meanwhile, I spent the day making a few more retextures on the clothing, and decided to take the time to correct some errors in my Akaviri Kojima mod (like bad icons, grid paths, floating trees, movable statics, etc.).

I have a chest in there that I've been putting the kimono items into for trying on as I work on them. What I'm thinking of doing is including a few of the outfits in there with the release, because I so often wished I had some appropriate clothing to wear with that setting. (Maybe 8 total per gender?) The fixes were minor and are already finished, but I can make a copy and remove the clothing chest completely if you'd rather I not release any of the clothing yet.

I have about 12 outfits so far, but have spent a lot of time trying to rework patterns among those before making more new ones. There is definitely a difference in retexturing and being a retexture artist. Tongue

- Corthian - 01-15-2007

I don't mind my name name being misspelled. I am pretty swamped lately. Just last night I realized I had to create an icon and ground mesh for every model I ever made, I nearly had a heart attack. So icons and ground mesh skins would be greatly appreciated.

I know of an easy way to add the folds to re skins, the reason I made black and white skins stems from this, make a new layer or object (I don't know much about Photo shop or Gimp) of the original black and white skin, then place under that the pattern, then adjust the black and white layer to texture the pattern. I hope you understand what I am trying to say, it works pretty well.
