We have an internal discussion going on regarding the data storage space on our server, which has shrunken to 400 megabytes. As you can guess it's not an immediate problem, but it's good to look at those things before it's too late, which might have forced us to cut files out the hard way just to make room for new forum posts. Please don't worry about it, continue your forum activites as normal. =)
But we're going to make a few small changes to ensure we won't run out of space. One of those changes is to encourage attaching compressed files instead of bloated, uncompressed ones, where the freeware 7-Zip program is the favored choice for compression. This mostly applies to the previous use of .gif, .zip, .max and .wav file types.
The file types you can attach now are:
image | jpg / jpeg / png
archive | 7z / exe / rar
modding | txt / esp / nif / 3ds
sound | mp3
you can attach any file, if you 7zip it first
In single cases, attaching an uncompressed file as opposed to a compressed one doesn't make much difference. But over the past year or so there's been over five thousand (!) attachments posted on the forum, tallying over two hundred megabytes, and on a scale like that the difference between compressed and uncompressed files become staggeringly noticeable. If we just use jpegs for images and 7zip (or .rar) for archives instead, I think we'll be able to save quite a bit of space in the future, in a way that shouldn't affect your productivity or fun here on the forum.
This only applies to attachments, of course. If you have an account at http://www.filefront.com/ or any other similar service you can link to any type of file you like, of any size, without any restrictions at all. =)
