Fighters Guild: Factions & Background - TheImperialDragon - 03-22-2008

There are four factions you’ll need to know about if you want to understand what the questline will be about:

- The Fighters Guild (obviously)
- The Thieves Guild
- The Bal Molagmer
- The Camonna Tong

Each of these factions is distinct in its own way:

FIGHTERS GUILD

The Fighters Guild is an Imperial guild where people go when they want to hire a mercenary. The guild only accepts legal work that can include pest extermination, escort missions, dangerous deliveries, the elimination of outlaws, and other similar jobs. People used to think of the Fighters Guild as a respectable group that held honour in high regard, but that was only up until the scandal on Vvardenfell came to light only a few years ago.

For those of you who are not familiar with the TES3 Fighters Guild story, the Vvardenfell guildmaster was a puppet of the Camonna Tong (he took orders from them) and used his power to further the Camonna Tong's agenda. His thugs would kill people who owed the Camonna Tong money, members of the non-violent TES3 Thieves Guild, and even lawmen in some cases. He was presumably killed by the player character somewhere along the TES3 timeline.

The current leader of the Redoran District branch of the Fighters Guild is Demnivi, an old Redguard warrior who isn't afraid of a good fight. After the corruption of the Vvardenfell branch was discovered, he worked very hard to keep both his own and his employees' names clean. His Champion (second in command) is Giralvel Virith, a Dark Elf warrior. He's been in the guild for over a decade, and has served as Demnivi's right hand for eight full years.

Currently, many people's opinions of the guild are based on what happened on Vvardenfell. However, Demnivi and Giralvel Virith are trying to change them by putting the Fighters Guild up against the crime syndicates of the Redoran District of Morrowind: The Camonna Tong, the Thieves Guild, and the Bal Molagmer.

More general information about the Fighters Guild can be found here.

THIEVES GUILD

Not to be confused with the TES3 guild or the TES4 Cyrodiil guild which most people are familiar with (all of the Thieves Guilds are separate), this is a new group in Morrowind that is on a steady rise to power. This guild appeared only two years ago - well after the disappearance of the old TES3 Thieves Guild.

One of the popular beliefs regarding the reasons for its indisputably quick rise to power is that these guys don't have a problem with violence at all - in fact they often do more than is necessary in the completion their objectives. They'll generally kidnap, torture, take hostages, blackmail, and kill if it suits them.

Ilitia Odian is the Master Thief of the Thieves Guild. She's a very violent and ruthless woman with a dark past. She usually passes orders on to her followers through her immediate sub-bosses, all of whom are loyal to her.

The Thieves Guild is fighting the Camonna Tong (more powerful) and the Bal Molagmer (much less powerful) for control over the crime in the Redoran District of Morrowind. The Fighters Guild often ends up fighting the Thieves Guild in rescue operations.

Information about the Thieves Guilds in general - not this one! - can be found here.

BAL MOLAGMER
(translated to "Stone-Fire Men")

The remnant of the old TES3 Thieves Guild, though these thieves follow a different idea than the old guild did. They steal from the rich and give to the poor - much like Robin Hood - and are dead-set against violence of any kind. Really, they are honourable thieves. They only exist because of an effort on the part of Gentleman Jim Stacey to resurrect the Bal Molagmer. He wanted people to think better of thieves.

Gentleman Jim Stacey was the Master Thief of the TES3 Thieves Guild. He sent the player on a number of quests in an attempt to restore faith in the old legend of the Bal Molagmer. After the guild itself was wiped out, a handful of loyal thieves left Vvardenfell to spread what Jim Stacey started to other parts of Morrowind.

The present-day Bal Molagmer of the Redoran District are led not by an individual, but by a council of sorts. There are rumours though that the Bal Molagmer council members aren't seeing eye-to-eye. One disagreement could potentially put the entire faction in chaos.

The Bal Molagmer are not looked on favourably by the citizens of Morrowind despite their noble intentions. Because the Bal Molagmer were restarted by the old Thieves Guild, and because the new extremely-violent Thieves Guild goes by the same name as the old guild, people can't often distinguish between the two factions. As a result, the Bal Molagmer are often accused of things the Thieves Guild has done. In terms of power, the Bal Molagmer is the least powerful major crime syndicate in the Redoran District. They are also the least known.

More information about the TES3 Thieves Guild and the Bal Molagmer can be found here and here, respectively.

CAMONNA TONG

The Camonna Tong is the crime syndicate that has been present in Morrowind for centuries. Its members typically hate outlanders, and are all Dunmer. They are also big fans of violence. It is the most powerful major crime faction in Morrowind due largely to its connections to Great House Hlaalu.

Its leader in TES3 was Orvas Dren, brother to a former Hlaalu grandmaster who became the Duke of Vvardenfell. As such, he had a LOT of influence on what happened in Morrowind's politics, particularly through House Hlaalu (and the Fighters Guild too, remember). He was killed by the player in TES3 but unfortunately most of the Camonna Tong's connections were strong, and so they remained. It is not uncommon for House Hlaalu to make secret deals with the Camonna Tong that work toward both of their interests. Probably one of the big reasons for the Camonna Tong's power.

The top leader of the Camonna Tong is in Hlaalu territory. This leaves another mysterious figure, Hlervim Venim, in charge of the Redoran District. Almost no one has seen him, some even say he's just a ghost name to throw people off. Thela Mornal is another important Camonna Tong character. She serves the Silgrad Council while secretly being a high-ranking member of the Camonna Tong and aims to make it to the top one day.

As the most powerful crime syndicate in Morrowind, the Camonna Tong has a number of fronts to worry about, including the other crime factions. Demnivi made a personal point of getting revenge on the Camonna Tong for what it did to the Vvardenfell branch of the Fighters Guild.

More information about the Camonna Tong can be found here.

The conflict between these groups is commonly referred to as the Gang War. The criminal factions – The Thieves Guild, the Bal Molagmer, and the Camonna Tong - are all fighting for control over crime in Morrowind while the Fighters is trying to get rid of it. The most powerful faction is the Camonna Tong, followed by the Fighters Guild, the Thieves Guild, and the Bal Molagmer (in decreasing order). Since it’s a four-way fight, each faction has three enemies.

And since the Fighters Guild has halls in each of the three major cities, each of the city questlines will focus on one of the above enemies. Reich Parkeep’s quests will involve the Thieves Guild, Steadhelm’s quests will deal with the Bal Molagmer, and Silgrad City quests will focus on the Camonna Tong.

These stories will run parallel to each other, meaning an event in one quest from one guildhall can’t change another event in another quest from another guildhall. The exception to this might be if an important character is used in two quests from different guildhalls. Other than that, I’ll be trying to keep this as simple and as orderly as possible. It’s already complicated enough. Big Grin
