Help with texture problem, blender - Taskaari - 01-19-2010
as you can see form the pics i have applyed a meterial and linked it to the helm and i have opend up the texture doc. in the mapto tab i have selected uv. i have made a uv map as you can see if you follow the link below. but still the texture does not appear in either blender niftools oblivion or morrowind. i have been stuck on this for nearly a week now. anybody got any ideas?

Not really sure, looking at the pics u posted, the texture is named "good helmet.dds.003"?And in the image block the name is "good helmet.dds.001.I'm guessing that you need to get rid of the .003 and the .001.
Now I've never had luck trying to get blender to load .dds files, so I just use tga or png's in blender.But looking at the nifscope pic it looks like you have it pointing to a .dds file, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't show up in nifscope.

hmm, i didnt notice that. i have had problems before because it was displaying the texture that i applied befor that i then deleted and the helm was purple. both of the dds files are actually the same dds file but for somereson their two of them. i can figure out how to change this so that they they are the same. ill keep fiddling untill i get it right.

Did you solve this? I'm using Blender 2.49 and current NIF scripts and I've (finally) got it working using dds both in the UV screen and in export - so if you want to bounce this around again I can try and help.
One thing: I'd be very suspicious of dds filenames with spaces or underscores in. If you want to break names up for readability, use CamelCase.

Agreed with Morcroft putting underscored can ruin your normal maps/glow maps so completely avoid that if you will :goodjob:

i have solved this problem by using another dds exporter. the photoshop one did not work. thanks for all the help.
still learning about all these other maps to make it look better. right now it looks dull and you cant see the detail in the texture very well.

OK - that's good!
Can't help you with Photoshop: I use Gimp. With the current NIFTools that works a treat. You definitely need the normal map, which also controls specularity (shininess). You only need a glow map if you need your texture to, well, glow. There's a good description of normal and glow maps here - it's for Gimp, but should give you a good start if you haven't found something better already.
