Exactly. The problem isn't that video games don't lend themselves to film: the "main quest" of most games is perfectly filmable. All it takes is a good screenplay (not the same as a good novel in any way: I've seen good films made of mediocre books and trash novelisations of great films) and someone to direct it. A few good actors help but are less important.

The reason they are so dire is that film studios don't "waste" their valuable top talent (screenwriters and directors) on a commodity they figure will sell itself to the intended audience, and never sell outside its niche, regardless of quality.
