Custom Rig problems - Heywood - 08-22-2006
Ok...so I painted the weights ont he mesh..exported the file as a .nif.
Then I brought it into NifSkope and pasted the mesh and skin data into the Clavidicus Vile (sp) .nif since it had the bones I needed in it and did the whole replacing the children thing to get my mesh in there insted of the Vile helm.
Here's were the problem happens. After placing the helmet in the CS in Cheydinhall's fighters guild basment, I loaded up the game and went to go test it out. Game loads up...I go to the fighters guild, go into the basement and pick up the helm off the ground. (Still no problems yet) But when I try to equip the darn thing Oblivion crashes!
I tried different setups of the .nif file, thinking I did something wrong (obviously I did...just dont know what it is yet).
Please if anyone knows of anything that would help me in getting this rig to work let me know. Oh, and don't say CuteUnit's tutorial because when i click her tutorial link i get an "internal server error" responce from the web page...so unless someone wants to save out the whole tutorial and make a pdf or something for me I can't read that
I'm frustrated at the moment so I'm taking a break from working on this while I try to think things out more...hope some of you can shed some light on the subject.

go to ESF. Search for CuteUnit. You will find one of her WIP threads. Click on her name. Go to users topics. Find her tutorial.

sounds like there is an issue that occours with clavicus helm when being overwritten or maybe you could have exported wrong though I doubt that. also sometimes when you save with niffscope it will say on the file that it has no sise that could also be your problem if thats it re rig it to the mask and save but look at the save before you exit niffscope to see if it has data sise if it does not then save again and then check if not then contiune saveing and checking till it does it sould only take 2 saves to get it to have data sise.

I've read all that is there...save for her "Rigging Cutely" tutorial because like I said I cant view that page...I'm sending an email to the webmaster of that server to see if there is some sort of problem with that particular site cause its the only link that doesnt work...and I sent CuteUnit a PM a few days ago about the link problem and asking if I could get a hard copy of the tutorial.
However...I dont need a tutorial on how to rig(I've already painted the weights, tho I will check the file again to make sure no verticies were left out as that might cause some trouble if they are)....I need to know how to set up the .nif in NifSkope so that it will read the data from the skeleton. The whole game crashing thing leads me to believe that there is something going on with the mesh not referencing the skeleton correctly, but thats just a guess....Oh well I'll keep reading everything I can and asking questions over at ESF about setting up the .nifs so they animate corectly.
I'll keep ya posted as usual, but I probably won't get back to this till tomorrow as its late already.
Oh and @Green: I tried using other .nifs besides Clavidicus as a base...no luck

Ok...quick update just so you know where I'm at in this adventure.
Making some progress...even if it's slow. I now have the mesh in game without the game crashing to desktop when it has to deal with someone equiped with it. However, even tho the weighting of the rig was fine in Maya, there seems to be some double transformation going on in game. Like there are parts of the mesh that are being affected too much and spiking out off the player...Gonna mess with it some more and hopefully make a little more progress.

St least you fixed the CTD, now its just an issue of finding whats not right an refining it.

Yep...gonna be alot of rumaging thru existing .nifs to see how they're set up and compairing them with mine. I'll let ya know how things go.

igh::Well I took one step foward and then one back to where I was. Its crashing again with my new attempts to fix the rig. I don't understand it, it at least equiped the one time even if it was screwy, but now (doing it the same way just editing the weights again it crashes) its back to the same thing....ugh. I'm not giving up tho, just confused atm.
Edit: dont wanna keep reposting so heres an update. Thanks to ThrottleKitty I now know what I was doing wrong in the setup of the .nif. There were a few processes I didnt know I had to run on the mesh before I saved the .nif. (createSkinPartition and UpdateTangentSpace i believe were the names) But I was able to get it in game, without crashing and much closser weighting to what I did in Maya. This is very good news to me, as it means I'm that much closer to getting the rig working correctly.
DA I'm going to PM you some wip shots to show ya the progress on how the mesh is deforming in game so you can see what i'm talking about.
Edit2: The mesh is rigged and working fine. However there are missing faces on one side of the mesh...I've checked the normals on the mesh and they're fine. It's not the textures cause if it was it would be happening symetrically on both sides...but its not....anyone who has an idea pleas PM me as this problem is the only thing stopping this from getting finished.

I hate replying in a row like this but I wanted to make sure people would see a new post and read it heh, cause this is a great thing!
As of 5 min ago I successfully completed my first custom rigged mesh in oblivion!! Now that I know how to get the information working in the game I can share it with people on the team. This way more of us can begin to create and rig custom armor for the project.
No more flipped faces, got that working...even tho I dont completely know why it was happening or what exactly I did that fixed it but at least its working. Not sure if this is the project's first rigged mesh but its mine so I feel the need to celebrate.

I'll work on getting my experiences with this into a tutorial that I'll post in the next day or so...I wanna make sure its as complete as possible and is understandable before I post it.
