this is just my opinion, but i think it would look better the dai-katanas were made thicker...much thicker. a little more like the claymores, but still curved and still having that element of grace.
Then a sheath would look good. But as of right now, a sheath would look cheap( again just my opinion) on the thinner version.

Maleficus8953, i assume that you mean a wider blade.

Japanese two handers are often well over an inch wide, and the blades are ofen thicker and much longer then western two handers.

Bethesda has stated that katana's in TES are different thatn in real life, katana are used one handed, while dai katana are used two handed and as claymores.

Yes, they are different, Bethesda's katana don't look well made at all, VagabondAngel has released some nice katana.

In what way are they different? From Bethesda's standpoint, as opposed to the obvious aesthetic differences?

In their usage. Katanas are not one handed weapons. Katanas are also not used with shields.

Ah.

Well, not completely so. Mushashi advocated a dual-weilding style with a Katana and wakizashi. I know from experience (shodan in Eishin-Ryu Iaido) that the Katana can be used one-handed. There are cuts that are only feasible with one-hand.

On the other hand (pun!), there are some cuts that require two. It is both.
