how to organize the Great House War

what if the Mages Guild became a huge factor?
or maybe there is a elite cadre within the guild that has developed to fight Telvanni?
The Mages Guild IS a very powerful organization... and was definitely weakened in TES3, but what if Helseth is giving them a hand?

so what if it turns out to be....

Great House Hlaalu
Sheogorad Nords
Dres Warlords
Morrowind Legion
(mages)

versus

Great House Redoran
Great House Telvanni
Ashlander Tribes
(betmeri)
Indoril Refugees

the Morrowind Legion will be Helseth's version of the Imperial Legions he has created in order to keep peace in the name of his monarchy... they are relatively fresh and untested perhaps... and during the war the Forts of Pelagiad, Hawkmoth, and Moonmoth will be controlled by the Morrowind Legion? Of course Duke Vedam Dren will be really unhappy about it all... and the Imperial Guard will be ousted or forced to work for the Morrowind Legion (think Red Army or something)....

but the Mages are backed by an international (Tamrielic) society the Mages Guild... and so definitely a match for Telvanni, the Morrowind Legion would be a match for Redoran even though fewer in number as they are trained in heavy armor and hold defensive positions...

however this plan will call for the Mages Guild to be drastically improved...

That sounds good, the mages guild being drastically improved would be a great thing too.

Keep in mind the Empire is based on the Roman Empire. And the Roman Empire's legions were, for the most part, loyal to their commanders, not to the emperor. The Imperial Legions in Morrowind could side with Helseth.

Marian reforms...
true, but parts of the Legions have left... and so to bolster the thinning ranks Dunmer have to be conscripted...
but to fit the land they are in, Helseth would probably have to enforce strict discipline on the Dunmer legions since these Dunmer might desert or not follow orders if they feel their clan is wronged or whatever...
it would be like the Red Army... you are killed for not doing what you are supposed to do...

However I think there is a slight rift between Duke Vedam Dren and Helseth....
see Helseth doesn't mind war, infact he uses war and revolution to secure his power... Duke Vedam Dren is a fan of peace and has been barely able to keep it stable in Morrowind... also he would probably be pissed when a few deadly Legions roll in and enact martial law on Imperial areas...

also this would effect the "Imperial Guard"

[/hr]
would the Mages Guild "military" be the BattleMages? can someone do the research please?

We should take in to account Redoran, Hlaalu, and Telvannis will for peace. If all 3 want to go into war, 1 or 2 want to go to war and the other is forced to etc.

I don't know about battlemages, but I think they would be like mages infantry, the high level wizards might fight if needed too.

sort of like a specialized corp. of mage-soldiers?

also the source of the war in Caldera
Redoran have claims to it, Hlaalu are controlling it in reality, and the Empire in name...
of course now Helseth controls it...
except you know how he reinstituted the Grand Council?
well because Redoran want Caldera back... and Indoril don't want Helseth nor Hlaalu to get it so they vote with Redoran, Telvanni don't vote, and the Dres vote for Redoran since they believe that since it is Redoran territory Redoran should have it, also they do not want Hlaalu to surpass them economically though they are allies...

Helseth then tries to take Caldera as Royal property but Redoran locals and milita block the way... some one gets hurt and suddenly fighting breaks out...

Redoran claim it was the Helseth troops, Helseth says it was Redoran...
Redoran say that Helseth was killing their clansmer and they deliver an ultimatum...
Hlaalu are unfased and they are willing to risk war...
Redoran though the Hlaalu would back down are surprised in the Hlaalu confidence and declare war.

Could you perhaps draw a parallel about House wars from Dune? It's filled with politics, schemes and strategy; I believe we're aiming for the same things?
The Forgotten Ones have returned.

hmm... after thinking about it some more...
we need to decide HOW the war starts in Caldera...

so let's see...

a riot breaks out... Redoran and Morrowind Legion are ready to rumble... and a few Hlaalu sneak it and do some pillaging... and then suddenly Mages Guild and Telvanni are at each other's throats... and then the Praih Kingdoms affiliated Ghorak and his orc storm out and beat up more people and the armorer guy in Caldera Hodismod or whoever also jumps out and a traveling ashlander gets caught it the fray.... no that's too much....

how about just Redoran and Hlaalu/Morrowind Legion occuption forces get nasty. The Hlaalu and Morrowind legion refuse to budge even when miraculously the Redoran have gotten rights to Caldera via a vote in the Grand Council. Thus the Redoran and Hlaalu/Morrowind Legion gets into a fight and no one knows who threw the first punch. However at this moment a local Telvanni rogue band attacks the Mages Guild. Then war begins.....

(after the Houses give out ultimatums and such protocol stuff eh?

What about Indoril and Dres though? How do they get involved?

Indoril refugees... and Dres pirate types...

the Indoril refugees go to Vvardenfell and bolster Redoran forces as well as being harbored by Telvanni who have agreed to do so.
but the Dres are trickier... see the majoirty of the elderly and the commoner Dres hate Helseth and such, but a new generation of Dres nobles likes to have alliance with Helseth... and they, in order to aid the Hlaalu who are out-matched have sent forces to help. However these are financed by Dres nobles, not the House itself...
just like the Indoril refugees don't represent Great House Indoril
